Desktops - the ins, outs and specifications

A desktop computer is generally the most affordable and popular type of computer available for most users. It is used by businesses and homes alike to perform functions such as internet access, office type duties and storing digital photos and videos.

The parts of most desktops are modular and this means that they can be easily replaced or upgraded. There are many components to the desktop pc and some of these include:-

A fan - used to keep the computer cool and may come in multiple amounts. These are present in nearly every computer.

The motherboard - joins up all the different components and streams the data.

Hard Disk Drive (HDD) - this is where all the information on the computer is stored - even when the power isn't on.

Processor - the computers 'brain'.

RAM - this is where the information on the computer is stored in a short term case - once the power to the computer is switched off the RAM is erased.

Speakers - so that you can hear sound through the computer.

The introduction of the microprocessor was key in the history of the computer, as it drastically reduced the size of them. Before the 1970s when this came out, computers were very large and cumbersome and were not usually owned by the individual, rather by businesses or universities. The microprocessor meant that the parts of the computer that worked out mathematics or carried out controlled functions on the computer could now all be help in one microchip, rather than several blocks of circuit board. This reduced the time and money it cost to produce a computer and so helped it become a possibility for the average family to own a computer for home use.
